The Greene County volleyball team opened the season with a pair of victories in a triangular held in Glidden Aug. 25. The Rams defeated Glidden-Ralston 2-1 and Collins-Maxwell 2-1.
In both matches the Rams took games one and three while their opponents won game two.
Greene County held on in a hard-fought battle with the Wildcats to win 26-24 while G-R evened the tally with a 25-21 victory. The Rams won the last game 15-11 for the match title.
Brianna Osterson led the team with 11 kills. Lily Muir added six kills and Kaylee Stalder had three. Natalie Heupel set 23 assists.
Osterson worked on defense to post three blocks and seven digs. Muir also had seven digs, followed by Heupel with four. Brianna Habben added two blocks.
Alexa Peters was the top server with 13 of 13 going over the net. She fired one ace serve. Eliza Carlson added 10 of 11 serves with an ace; Katrina Heupel went 9/12 with two aces and Muir was perfect in nine attempts.
In the second match, Greene County came out swinging with a 25-16 victory. C-M battled back to take the second game 25-17. The Rams dominated the third set, winning 15-4.
Osterson again led the offense with nine kills, followed closely by Muir with eight. Natalie Heupel and Isabella Schroeder each hammered five kills. Heupel set 21 assists.
Habben defended the net with three blocks while N Heupel, Muir and K Heupel covered the court with six, five and four digs respectively.
Katrina Heupel was strong at the service line, firing 14 of 16 with one ace serve. Carlson added 9/11 with three aces. Peters went 11/11 at the line with an ace. Osterson added two ace serves on five of seven attempts.
Thursday the Rams traveled to Fort Dodge to contest the Gaels of St Edmond. The hosts won 3-0 but Greene County held their own in scores of 25-23, 25-21, 25-21.
Brianna Osterson led the Rams in kills with seven and Lily Muir had four kills.
“We stayed aggressive, but had too many little errors,” noted C
coach Chris Heisterkamp.
Greene County isn’t scheduled to play again until Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Rams were originally scheduled to host their tournament on Saturday, but the new high school gym won’t be ready to host competition. The tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3.
